Joey’s Draw First Blood In North City League!
Scoil Iosaif, Fairview 4 – 1
Scoil Bhríd, Killester 3 – 3
In a heart-stopping, nerve-tingling, finger-biting epic the boys of St. Joseph’s ran out narrow but deserving winners against much vaunted opponents from St. Brigid’s Killester in the first ever game of the newly set up North City League.
This was a real David Vs Goliath struggle as Division Three Joey’s took on the Division One kingpins. Right from the start the local boys threw everything bar the kitchen sink into the fray. Uyi Ogie, surely Nigeria’s finest ever hurler, opened the scoring when he slammed home from five metres following a weaving solo run. The same player followed up less than three minutes later and really put the cat amongst the pigeons with another rasper which left Killester reeling. St. Brigid’s only reply was a pointed free although it did take a couple of fine saves from Loughlan O’Brien to prevent a Brigid’s goalfest!
The second half began with Brigid’s launching an all out assault on the Joey’s goal and they grabbed a fine goal and then another pointed free to leave only a point between the sides as the game entered the last quarter.
The diminutive Matthew Weafer showed a clean pair of heels to the Brigid’s defence when he ran on to a Brandon Kilkenny clearance and calmly slotted home his side’s third goal. Brigid’s broke clear and pulled a goal back but Weafer scored a neat point. Uyi Ogie completed his hat-trick and Joey’s looked safe but a pointed free and a late, late goal brought the margin back to the minimum. The last few minutes were not for the faint-hearted as Joey’s fought tooth and nail to hold on to the lead and survive they did thanks in the end to steely determined defence by Caelan O’Meara, Ross Mason, Matas Gallinas, Dmytro Protsenko, heroic hurling by the brilliant Brandon Kilkenny and superb opportunism by Uyi Ogie up front.
Man of the Match: Ross Mason
