Joey’s Seniors Send Out A Message!

Extraordinary Win For Never-Say-Die Joey’s!

Scoil Iosaif, Fairview 2 – 1
Scoil Fhiachra, Beaumont 2 – 0

Reigning Division One champions, Fiachra’s of Beaumont, came to Fairview for what they expected would be a stroll in the park against Division Three opponents, Joey’s but they got a lot more than they bargained for and went home battered, bruised and shell-shocked!
St. Fiachra’s began the game with the aid of a near-hurricane force wind and laid siege to the Joey’s goal from the word go. Such were the heroics of the stalwart Fairview defence led by Loughlan O’Brien between the posts and Séan “The Rock” Reilly in front of him that in the first twenty-nine minutes Joey’s conceded just a single goal. Cruelly, on the stroke of half-time a speculative Fiachra’s shot took a wicked deflection and spun over the line to leave Joey’s trailing by two goals at the interval.
A stirring half-time team talk saw Joey’s take the field with a resolute, determined attitude. Daryl Conroy rocked the Beaumont boys with an early goal to put the cat amongst the pigeons and the game turned into a classic battle: Joey’s attacking for all they were worth and Fiachra’s fighting a tough, uncompromising defensive action. In the final minutes Caelan O’Meara hit the equalising goal and many a team would be happy with a share of the spoils but not this Joey’s outfit. “Cometh the hour, cometh the man” is an old saying and for Joey’s the magnificent Brandon Kilkenny stepped up to the plate. As the game edged into injury time Brandon gathered a ball sixty metres from the Fiachra’s goal and let loose a rocket of a shot which, to enormous cheers from the Joey’s followers, sailed between the posts. The referee then blew the long whistle and Joey’s had a well-deserved win.
There were outstanding displays all through the Joey’s team but special mention must be made of Ross Mason, Jake Bradley, Dmytro Protsenko, Kornel Tuzyk and Uyi Ogie, the latter surely Nigeria’s finest hurler.
Man of the Match: Brandon Kilkenny, St. Joseph’s
